Ford’s goal for 1966 was 700,000 Mustangs to built in an extended model year. A new deluxe interior featuring the galloping pony seat inserts served to continue its popularity. Instead of a separate luxury model, Ford decided to offer a set of luxury options. These options were given the name ‘Interior Decor Group’. Most noticeable of these features was the galloping pony inserts on the seats. For this reason, the Interior Decor Group is often referred to as the ‘Pony’ interior. These special interiors were also known as Deluxe or Luxury interiors. Cars with the ‘Pony’ interior trim were sometimes called ‘Ponycars’ or ‘Pony Mustangs’. In 1966 Ford offered many styling ‘refinements’. The options/accessories in the 1966 Mustang totalled over 70 compared to 50 in 1964.

There were 55 cars starting the 1965 Bathurst, the biggest entry the race had ever seen. There were a lot of firsts for the race this year, the first international drivers appeared and the first time a Japanese car would race. It was also the first time a outright winner was recognised, this saw fierce competition by manufactures to produce a race winning car, and bragging rights of a true Bathust winner.
The main competition for the outright winner was between the Mini Cooper S and the Cortina GT 500. The Geoghegan brothers Cortina was favourite and secured Pole Position, although the Minis had not qualified well, they were pushing their way through the field once the flag dropped. While the leaders were battling out in front, Seton was running comfortably further back in 5th position.
The GT 500 was a one-off race car and was not yet race proven. After the Geoghegan Cortina completed its first stop, the car was low on power and immediately returned back to the pits for new plugs. Several Cortinas had began to retire from the race, but the Seton/Bosworth car was going strong and now leading from McPhee/Mulholland, also in a Cortina.
Although the Mini Coopers were as quick as the Cortinas, the extended fuel tank of the GT 500 gave them the edge. The 11D Cortina GT 500 of Seton/Bosworth would go on to a comfortable win, two minutes ahead of McPhee.

The 1972 Bathurst was memorable as it was the first time rain had significantly affected the race. It was won by Peter Brock driving a Holden Dealer Team Torana, the first of Brock’s record nine victories. Brock finished a lap ahead of Queensland racer John French driving a Ford XY Falcon GT-HO Phase III, this despite Brock being penalised one minute at his last pit stop for starting his car while the HDT crew were still re-fueling.
Pole sitter and winner of the previous two Bathurst races, Allan Moffat, had a race he would rather forget. After dicing for the lead with Brock in the early laps, Moffat spun his Phase III Falcon at Sulman Park on top of The Mountain in the wet conditions. Although he would fight his way back, he would twice be penalised one minute for restarting his car during pit stops before the re-fueling had been completed. Later in the race the Falcon would also encounter brake problems and Moffat dropped back to finish the race in 9th place, 8 laps down on Brock.

The GT-HO was a true supercar and with a top speed of over 140mph, was the fastest four door sedan in the world at the time. Approximately 300 XY GT-HO Phase III Falcons were produced. This new XY had more subtle side striping than the XW, but it lacked none of the aggressive look people had come to expect. A functional, as well as decorative, air-cleaner assembly with a scoop protruding through a hole in the bonnet was standard. Ultimately this scoop assembly would become known as a “shaker”.
The driving lights, bonnet pins and bonnet blackouts enhanced the car’s appearance. The car was available in many colours and three trim colours, black, white and saddle.
As with the XW GT and the XY GT and previous GT-HOs, the Phase III had the top of the line interior with a centre console, a sports steering wheel and a sports dash with a 140mph speedometer and an 8000rpm tachometer.
The 351 cubic inch four barrel Cleveland engine was retained from the Phase II. Though the Phase II looked different from the Phase III, mechanically they were similar. The most significant engine improvement on the Phase III was the introduction of a full extractor exhaust system. A 780cfm Holley carburettor with a manual choke replaced the 750cfm Holley used on the Phase II. A few internal modifications to the Phase III allowed the engine to produce more horsepower.
Converting the power from the 5.8L Cleveland V8 was difficult with the standard tyres, upgrading to something more ‘suitable’ for the job was essential. This model has 12-slot rims, a favourite of the period, paired with the fattest tyres we could fit underneath the guards.
The XY was such a beautifully built car, with awesome power and handling to match. The ultimate model from the time when rubber and cubic inches were king.
